The Society began supporting Jane Goodall in 1961. Her discoveries were startling: She had seen chimpanzees—assumed to be vegetarians—stalk, kill, and eat other animals. She had watched them strip the leaves from twigs, insert the sticks into termite mounds, and fish out delectable snacks. This meant chimps were not only using tools, but fashioning them as well, a trait previously considered exclusively human.

Now:

Jane is determined to use just about every minute she has working to save chimpanzees and to empower people young and old to do what they can for a better world. The Jane Goodall Institute is helping to mentor a new generation of chimp researchers. She travels to Gombe at least twice a year to “recharge her batteries” and see what her chimpanzees are up to. “When I’m on my own at Gombe now, I can easily recapture how I felt at 26, when all the world was new,” she says. “There’s still a spiritual power there. I can breathe it in.”

Over the course of 50 years Jane has witnessed the lives of three generations of chimpanzees. The dream that she set in motion lives on, and her partnership with National Geographic continues.

While researching Kelefa Sanneh’s article about Dapper Dan, which ran in The New Yorker’s recent Style Issue, we looked at the work of many photographers who covered the eighties hip-hop scene. One of them, Janette Beckman, recently returned from Caracas, where she photographed the hip-hop community at a school that teaches a new kind of break dance and music called Tuki, which mixes street styles, pop culture, house, and techno.

Tuki is taught at Tiuna el Fuerte, a cultural center built from old shipping containers and covered in graffiti, in the El Valle barrio. There is a recording studio, an underground performance space, and hip-hop and break-dancing workshops. It’s funded by the Chávez government, and is run by the rap artists Apache, a.k.a. Cultur MC, and Piky.

Interactive installation using a triangular method of representation with a motorized array:

The “Angles Mirror” rejects the idea of building a picture based on relative lightness and darkness. Instead, it explores a system of linear rotation that indicates the direction of an object’s contour. A wall-mounted sculpture, the “Angles Mirror” is a sharp triangular block of steel, dotted with yellow indicator arms that pivot. Based on the isometric grid, its structure favors the patterns and angles found in an equilateral triangle. The arms, which do not have the ability to change brightness or luminosity, use input from a camera and reconstruct the view with areas of varying angles. The negative space surrounding a viewer is translated into horizontal lines on the picture plane. Rather than creating a photorealistic image, the three-dimensional movement of a figure is represented, visualizing optical flow as viewer’s proximity to the sculpture changes. A nuanced contour results, as the viewer shifts back and forth, altering how the structure of space is perceived. Similar to “Fan Mirror”, in the “Angles Mirror”, the sequence of movement across the picture plane is directed in part by its audience. When the viewer walks away from the work, or chooses to view the sculpture from a distance, a series of predefined images and transitions cover the object’s surface.
